Third Age (Ad)venturingAdventuring is all about a state of mind, a can do attitude, an attitude that says lets go for it but lets do it sensibly.In my own case I had worked 30 odd years for the same company and was getting bored, I was in a rut. I wanted to do something different! As I drove to work each morning a grey feeling overcame me. The journey to work was dispiriting as I stopped at the same traffic lights, listened to the same radio programme, and heard the same politicians saying the same old things. After struggling through the congestion and parking the car I was then faced with the long walk in through the drizzle…. did I want another 15 years of this? Would any of you? Work was also getting me down it had become too managed, too regulated, too predictable. In earlier times, I would get the funding to finance a development idea based on my track record and the ability to deliver. Not so today__ one has to go through endless committees and scoring matrix to get the funding. Once I calculated the air fares of the committee members monitoring the project exceeded the actual project budget…business that gets to this state of paralysis by analysis is doomed, so when a voluntary redundancy scheme was announced I put my hand up and now find myself typing this introduction. Monuments of RegulationsMany of you reading this must have similar thoughts; teachers have lost most of the spontaneity of their jobs. Government over regulation has torn the heart out of the profession. The same process is happening with other jobs and professions. A proscriptive culture has descended on society with a new management class created that believes management is about measurement rather than leadership. Thus we are faced with less and less discretion in our working lives everything appears to be measured and regulated with mountains of paperwork to fill in to no specific gain.
